Overview

Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a full-time opportunity for a Public Affairs Community Organizer in San Bernardino, CA.

 

We are looking for a dynamic Community Organizer to support grassroots and political efforts to bolster PPOSBC’s leadership in advocacy, grassroots organizing, and public education, with a specific focus on BIPOC communities. The ideal candidate will assist in developing and managing community outreach efforts to build a progressive activist base, helping to recruit, engage, and mobilize targeted constituencies around reproductive rights issues.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree

 

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, community outreach and/or advocacy engagement.
  • Experience with databases and list management is preferred.
  • A strong understanding of diverse communities and the ability to function within those respective communities at a grassroots level is a must.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies, goals, and philosophy of Planned Parenthood.
  • Knowledge of political campaigns and policymaking processes at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Proven ability to work independently and without close supervision is essential, as this role requires taking initiative, managing time effectively, and staying self-motivated to achieve goals in a fast-paced environment.
  • General knowledge of the history of reproductive rights in the United States and in California.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good judgment, and a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
  • Demonstrate specific community organizing expertise in one of three communities (African American, Latino, or AAPI) in Orange County and/or San Bernardino County.
  • The ability to function at a high level in a team-oriented environment is required, as is the ability to relate to diverse communities and to perform multiple tasks under deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends, sometimes consecutively) and travel as required within the County of San Bernardino and between Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

 

Language Requirements/Preference:

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese preferred.

  • Must demonstrate high-level computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Electronic medical records experience may also be required.
  • Abortion patients are cared for at each of our health centers and in part through the administrative, support, and other non-clinical services provided at all PPOSBC locations and by all PPOSBC employees, and supporting these critical services is an essential job duty and fundamental responsibility of all employees.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions: Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties, and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.

 

Grassroots Advocacy & Community Organizing

  • Support advocacy and organizing efforts for targeted constituencies, including Latinx and AAPI.
  • Assist with grassroots activities such as canvassing, phone banking, town halls, rallies, etc.
  • Develop an active base of involved Reproductive Rights leaders by mentoring existing activists into expanded roles and inviting in new volunteers.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and executing events, ensuring smooth logistics and effective participant engagement.
  • Manage and staff tabling activities in the community and on college campuses.
  • Assist other staff as needed by providing materials, information, and technical advice for grassroots advocacy in college campuses, health centers, and the community.
  • Develop and sustain relationships and partnerships with local community and student groups.
  • Participate in outreach/visibility events as assigned.
  • Identify key opportunities for collaboration and engagement in the Orange and/or San Bernardino Counties to elevate the Community Action Fund’s presence as a leader in the space.

 

Advocacy (Volunteer) Recruitment:

  • Perform all tasks necessary for the administering of the advocacy (volunteer) program: recruitment, providing information to prospective volunteers, conducting volunteer orientation, monthly volunteer nights, performance management, sustaining volunteer engagement, etc.
  • In coordination with the advocacy manager, oversee and maintain Community Action Fund advocacy databases, lists, and resources.
  • Regularly update the Advocacy Manager on progress, challenges, and outcomes of grassroots efforts and community organizing activities.
  • Coordinate with volunteers to ensure they have the necessary resources and support to carry out their tasks effectively.

 

Electoral Work:

  • Recruit and mobilize volunteers to support pro-reproductive healthcare and sex education pro-choice candidates through phone and text banks, precinct walks, and other grassroots efforts.
  • Represent agency at political events and participate as needed in electoral activities.
  • Communicate as needed with other Planned Parenthood entities regarding activities, updates, and timely issues.
