Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a full-time opportunity for a Nutritionist in Santa Ana, CA who will provide nutrition counseling and education services to high/low risk participants.  Conduct group classes and perform other functions as requested by the supervisor.  Assist in training new staff members.

Essential Functions:  Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.

  • Work under the direction of the WIC Program Director/Center Manager to ensure that WIC program activities are in compliance with CA and USDA policies and procedures.
  • Work as team under the designated Center Manager and assist to assure compliance with all internal and external needs.
  • Must promote, practice and exemplify a team player’s role.
  • Review of risk factor distribution, breastfeeding rates and dietary practices/intake of the community served.
  • Provide Planned Parenthood Family Planning referral system when needed to refer participants to health centers.
  • Certify high risk/low risk participants: develop nutrition care plan, follow-up and document using WIC Wise. Conduct quarterly individual WIC staff audits and group class observation as part of the quality assurance and compliance processes. These reports should be reported and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Complete nutrition assessments and provide dietary/nutrition counseling for all high risk/low risk participants (Level 3 and level 4). Follows Nutrition Service Plan goals for the agency and participates in quality assurance of approved goals.
  • Assist supervisor in local administration functions of WIC Wise. Assurance that there is separation of duties in the WIC benefit issuance processes for security purposes. 
  • Perform breastfeeding counseling in the WIC program. Ensure that WIC procedures promote breastfeeding among WIC participants using the Breastfeeding Protocol, award incentives are in place, Continues to increase knowledge of lactation practices and progresses.
  • Assist WIC Sites in operations, client flow, functions (e.g., WIC card security and control, reports and supply inventory) and assist staff to assure clients are served in timely manner.
  • Assist the Center/Assistant Manager in WIC outreach activities by attending meetings outside events and building collaboration efforts within the community. Assure internal and external referral systems are operational and efficient for clients.
  • Conduct nutrition classes as determined by the NSP. Take active role in training of new staff, WNA certification and updating staff in regards to nutrition care plans, risk codes and areas that pertain to nutrition assessments, materials and handouts.
  • Be a role model for the staff in conducting good customer service to all external and internal clients.
  • Provide nutrition counseling information, recognition of various risk codes, which are required to be added in all WIC Wise screens.
  • Provide input in staff counseling/evaluations at various stages of employments. Provide staff in-services and cross departmental trainings.
  • Attend all agency staff meetings and nutritionist staff meetings. Attend WIC - sponsored trainings and meetings.  May require out of town travel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by WIC Program Director or Center Manager.


  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and reporting personnel issues to the designated WIC Supervisor.
  • Insure smooth, efficient WIC operation by assisting with development and enhancement of staff utilization, developing optimal staffing patterns/training.
  • Ability to communicate training issues with all levels of staff and setting up goals to reach the optimal quality needed in the WIC nutrition program for its maximum success.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to effectively present information to WIC clients, public groups, and Planned Parenthood staff.  Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.  Ability to demonstrate resourcefulness, creativity and flexibility as a team player.  Ability to relate to diverse communities.  Accuracy and attention to detail essential. 


Licensure and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Passed the registered dietitian exam.
  • Current updated CDR certification.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition, Public Health or related field.
  • Completed an ADA approved Dietetic Internship.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Knowledge of WIC program preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in lactation education preferred.
